Meaningful Membership
Are you interested in social, intellectual and spiritual engagement in a community of progressive minds and caring connections? Are you in sympathy with the principles of freedom and reason in religion and life? If so, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Franklin, NC (UUFF) may be a meaningful and enriching community for you.
Membership in the Franklin UU Fellowship calls each of us to pursue our own intellectual and spiritual paths in a faith community where we support one another. Joining our Fellowship can be as simple as signing a membership application in affirmation of the principles and practices which guide Unitarian Universalism. We have no dogma or creed but rather an agreement to try to live our UU principles. When we fall short, our goal is to acknowledge this, realize our humanity, make amends, learn from the experience and connect again in positive ways. Existing and new members are both encouraged to make their liberal religion visible by showing their commitment to their congregation in many ways. We have been a ‘lay-led’ congregation for 50 years and actual participation is called for in various ways and is truly what makes our faith relevant and ‘alive’ to each person.
Members are asked to participate in the life of the congregation by listening, learning, growing personally and spiritually, nurturing one’s self and others and by being present, celebrating the good, and being generous in helping one another and our communities. By being authentic and respectful in our interactions with one another we can move in the world in positive and profound ways. A professor was known to tell his graduate students that he was pleased they all wanted to do good in this world when they graduated. Then he asked them to consider doing good in ways that helped them feel good, too. That’s the way it feels to many that connect with our Fellowship. And we celebrate that realization, and each other. We offer many choices in how a member can engage with UUFF.
The path to membership begins with visiting us and finding out what our services and people are like. You are welcome to contact our Membership committee people with your comments, feedback and questions. From time to time we have workshops designed to give you a good basic understanding of Unitarian Universalism and UUFF. These workshops also provide an opportunity for us to get to know one another better. Orientations are offered periodically and when we have a number of new members we ask them to participate in a simple symbolic, yet meaningful ‘joining ceremony’ during a Sunday service. This event is appreciated by the newer members and by all of us at UUFF as we have the chance to ‘officially’ welcome you!
Often, the Membership Committee will staff a Guest Table in Celebration Hall and will be pleased to meet you and answer any questions you may have. You may also contact our Membership Committee Chair, Bonnie Gramlich anytime, at membership@uufranklin.org or by texting or phoning her at 828-482-9770. No question is too tiny and all comments are appreciated. We look forward to hearing from you!
