The Merry Month of May

Holley Ulbrich. Beltane. May 1st is an ancient and rather rowdy fertility festival. Many of us are done with reproducing our species, and not drawn to or gifted at gardening. How can we use our fertile minds and imaginations to connect with, honor, and care for Mother Earth?

From You I Receive, To You I Give

Holley Ulbrich. The four forbidden topics of polite conversation? Sex, money, religion, politics.  Let's leave the sex and politics to the evening news and focus on exploring how the intersection of our faith community and our money enriches us as individuals and in our relationships to one another and the world around us.

Harry Potter Meets the Last Jedi: Adolescents and Mentors

Holley Ulbrich. Our kids, and many of our adults, get their values and conduct their search for truth and meaning in a lot of places. One of those places is popular culture. Along with sex and violence, some kinds of popular culture; convey good role models and positive values packaged in ways that speak to adolescents--and their mentors. The Harry Potter series and Star Wars have been important in doing just that. What are the lessons from these two series for adolescents, young adults--and their mentors?

When The Haints Come Marchin' In: Life Lessons from Gullah, Rome, Shinto and Henry Louis Gates

Holley Ulbrich. Many religions--Shinto, Confucianism, African religions--venerate the ancestors. The Gullah people compress the ancestors into "Haints" and ward them off by painting their doorways blue. Free Church, Free People: Covenant and Democracy

Holley Ulbrich. Ours is the only religious tradition that makes democracy an article of faith. Democracy replaces a hierarchical (king, bishop) rule with a covenantal relationship among equals. As we prepare for the midterm elections in just over three weeks, how do our practice of covenant and our fifth principle offer us inspiration and guidance on being responsible citizens of our congregation and our state and nation?

Quilting Your Own Theology

Holley Ulbrich. Each of us has a unique way of making sense of our world and our lives, but with lots of common elements. Our "cosmology" is built up over a lifetime, sometimes alone, sometimes with others, sometimes intentionally and systematically, sometimes in response to events. Our congregations are our quilting bees, and our quilts are always a work in progress. What's your like?

Our Tree-Hugging Religious Ancestors

Holley Ulbrich. Emerson, Thoreau and friends would be shocked to discover that the Unitarian faith tradition they all (except for Theodore Parker) abandoned in their search for truth and meaning has embraced their wisdom and carried on their commitment to social and environmental justice. Come visit our version of ancestry.comand explore the content of your religious DNA as a Unitarian Universalist..

Finding Common Ground

Holley Ulbrich. How many of us like to say we came to this faith to find a community of like-minded people?  That's a place to begin, but the world outside our silo or sangha demands that we try to find common ground with people who aren't "like-minded." This week we will reflect on some of the many paths to holding firm to your core beliefs and values while playing well with others who  occupy different silos and sanghas. Similarity comforts, but diversity enriches.
