Finding Renewal in Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”

Dan Teslow.  In Hebrew, “Hallelu”, is an exhortation to give “joyous praise in song”. “Jah” refers to the divine; to god, to that which transcends.  “Hallelujah” embodies the joy, the gratitude and renewal found in that transcendence

As humans, we fall, then rise again in praise and renewal.

Does the “Yah” in “Hallelujah” refer only to the personal god of faiths like Islam, Christianity and Judaism or also to the forces of nature celebrated in Paganism, the evolution  of human nature sought by Humanism and the inherent basic goodness taught by practices such as Buddhism?

Leonard Cohen’s dark lyrics, both “holy” and “broken, offer other views of Hallelujah, in spiritual and in unsettling secular and sexual scenarios. In every verse there is a fall and in every verse; a renewal.

What's "Jah" to You?

Lessons from the Kwanzaa Candles

Dan Teslow. This is the time of the year when Kwanzaa comes, followed closely by the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The message spoken quietly in African American homes at Kwanzaa is shouted to the world two weeks later at the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Even if we are not African American, there is a lot that the candles of Kwanzaa have to teach us.

Reflections On The "Beloved Community", UU’s and The Civil Rights Movement

MLKDan Teslow. The "Beloved Community”, a phrase made a household term for activists by Martin Luther King Jr, is now embraced by Unitarian Universalists .

After attending Unitarian services for years, why didn’t MLK cast his lot with UU’s instead of traditional Black Christian Churches? This message shares thoughts on this question while examining Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt’s “To Pray Without Apology” .

Mike Holland will share traditional Gospel Music.

Enter, Rejoice, and Come In! - A Visit from Father Hosea Ballou

Dan Teslow appears as Father Ballou, who is presented as the first Unitarian Universalist voice. in America. Ballou sought to “HAPPIFY” Religion by LOVING the HELL OUT of people. Burning in Hell forever was the image most children took to bed in early 19th century New England. Calvinist Jonathan Edwards preached the anguish of “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, Punishment by a Cruel Parent.

American Universalism developed in opposition to this harsh view of the Divine. Universalists taught that a loving God would not condemn anyone to eternal punishment. Ballou rejoiced in the Divine as loving, compassionate and supportive of humanity; the Good Parent we all long for.
